What is Residual Income?

Residual Income Explained

By definiation, residual income is the money that you have left over after all of your bills and debts, including your mortgage, have been paid. Residual income can also be defined as the money that you receive after the initial sale or work is completed. Residual income is income received over time, usually on a regular basis, for work done one time. This type of income can come from many different sources and is not confined to any one geographical area.

Examples of residual income are:

• Write a book. Once the work is done, you'll receive a percentage of the sale price of each book.


• Become an insurance agent or sales person who gets commission each year a client renews a policy or contract.


• Get involved with network marketing and affiliate programs. With most programs you earn a commission based on individuals who purchase items from your website, join a paid membership program or refer others


• Create a dating site or directory. Although you may have to maintain the website, people will pay to be a member of your site, whether you're actively involved or not.

These are just a few of the hundres of ways you can earn a residual income, which may also be referred to as a passive income or leveraged income. Although the three different types of income: residual, passive and leveraged are slightly different in their legal definition, all three provide for a source of income that does not involve your active participation.

Affiliate marketing is an internet-based program that can be created and offered by any company to aid in their effort to attract paying customers or visitors through established affiliates. The affiliated marketing industry is comprised of four elements: the merchant or retailer, the network, the affiliate and the customer. The principal behind affiliate marketing is:

• The merchant or retailer creates a product or service.


• The merchant or retailer crates an automated program through which others (the affiliates) can sell his products and services


• The affiliate places pictures, descriptions of the product or service on their website, with a link back to the merchants sales or landing page.


• A customer sees the product or service on the affiliates website, clicks the link and arrives on the merchant's sales page.


• The customer purchases the product or service.


• The affiliate receives from the merchant a commission based on the revenue received from the sale of the product or service.

Once the affiliate marketing program is setup, it becomes an automated system that requires no additional work on behalf of the merchant or the affiliate. Thus, an affiliate marketing program is a great source of residual income for both the merchant and the affiliate.
